Late Night Confessions is out

It's out. "Late Night Confessions" went up yesterday, everywhere you listen.

I wrote about this one a couple of weeks back so I won't retell the whole thing. The short version: it lives in that hour after everybody sensible has gone home, when the volume comes down and people start saying true things.

What I'll add now that it's actually out is the part I was nervous about. It's slow. It doesn't build to anything. There's no moment where it opens up and gets big, because it's a song about a conversation, and conversations don't have key changes. Every instinct I have as somebody who likes a chorus was telling me to give it a lift somewhere in the back half. I kept not doing it. I still think that was right.

Quiet songs have a harder road. They don't get added to things. They don't announce themselves. What they do instead is find one person at a time, usually late, usually when that person needs it — and that's a slower kind of success I've come to prefer to the other kind.

So if it turns up for you at one in the morning sometime this fall, that's it working exactly as designed.
